Sony WH-1000XM4, Review: Best Sound Quality and Automated Noise Cancellation to Follow as Great Reference in Wireless Headphones

You wanted to know how Sony could improve its headphones. After several years of testing its noise cancellation, it seemed difficult to surprise us again. But these Sony WH-1000XM4 have evolved in a section as important as little care to date: the comfort of use.

We've been with Sony's new wireless headphones for about two weeks. As with the WH-1000XM3s, their amazing noise cancellation makes them one of the best options on the market. With this fourth generation, with a very similar design, Sony has incorporated new functions to adapt the sound to the environment and improved connectivity.

In appearance, they are small additions, but after getting used to it it is difficult to go back. Gestures and functions that have vastly improved the experience and make these Sony WH-1000XM4 the most practical wireless headphones for day-to-day use. We tell you everything in our analysis.

Sony WH-1000XM4: Technical SpecificationsWe are before a closed enclosure circumaural headphones, where the pads completely cover our ears. In the same way as the rest of the high-end Sony models, we have electrodynamic transducers and a neodymium magnet. For the diaphragm, there have been no changes either and a 40 mm driver, made of liquid crystal polymer, is maintained.

For noise cancellation, the Sony WH-1000XM4 bet again on the HD Noise Canceling Processor QN1 chipset. And this is where the news begins to arrive. The new Sony headphones have two microphones in each earpiece and, through the Dual Noise Sensor system, they capture ambient noise to automatically adjust the noise cancellation depending on where we are.

Sony adds a new chipset for connectivity, which means these WH-1000XM4 come with Bluetooth 5.0.

At the autonomy level, the headphones promise up to 30 theoretical hours and we have a USB type C charging port.

The main improvements come at the software level. Sony incorporates DSEE Extreme and Edge-AI, a series of algorithms developed together with Sony Music Studios Tokyo to analyze music in real-time and improve fidelity. Along with this artificial intelligence, new options are added such as multipoint, to connect the headphones via Bluetooth to two devices at the same time or the Speak-to-Chat mode to be able to have short conversations without removing the headphones. We will talk about them below, as they represent an important change when using them.

Construction and ergonomics: a recognizable design without major changes
The Sony WH-1000XM4 are practically identical in design to the previous generation. Regardless of the company being happy with the result, we believe that there is a question of strategy in this decision. The WH-1000XM4 will try to extend in time a design that tries to be iconic. With the Sony logo on the side, the polycarbonate finish and that urethane foam on the ear pads.

This is a headband headset that transmits quality and robustness, a feeling that we already experienced with the previous model and the truth is that they have withstood the passing of the years with solvency, which anticipates that these WH-1000XM4 are also manufactured to endure in time.

Ergonomics is one of the most important aspects of headphones and the Sony WH-1000XM4 distributes the weight very well. With their 254 grams, they are quite light and, despite using them for hours, you do not feel tired. The homogeneity is excellent and although there has not been a technical leap, we would say that the WH-1000XM4 is minimally more stylized and pick up our ear more comfortably, with a little more space. Stability is the same as last year, but we noticed slightly less pressure on the pads. A detail that does not change the general feeling when using them.

The urethane foam in the pads continues to adapt perfectly, but we must continue to dry the rough skin surface after hours of use.

The placement of the connectors is equivalent to the previous model. We have the USB C port on the right earbud and the 3.5mm jack on the left, near the battery indicator LED, the on/off button and the new 'Custom' button, which is equivalent to the old NC / Ambient button.

Both the twist and the flexibility of the headphones have not changed, but there is a slight improvement in the lines and contours. The WH-1000XM4 has a more profiled design, with fewer nooks and crannies.

For touch control, we have the same gesture configuration: dragging your finger up to go up, the same way to go down, forward to skip the song, and double-tap to pause or continue playback. They work well, but we would have liked Sony to improve the sensitivity of the gestures since in our experience the result is the same as other years.
