How to calibrate the compass in Google Maps: all the ways

Google Maps is one of the most used applications in Spain. Thanks to this app we can browse, locate sites or even plan our trips safely and simply. As with any other app on Android, there may be malfunctions in it at some point. There's a problem that has happened to many: the compass is malfunctioning.

If the compass in Google Maps malfunctions, we're going to have trouble navigating or searching for an address, because it's not going to do it properly. Luckily, we can calibrate the compass in the app so that it will work well again. To achieve this there are various methods.

The traditional method for calibrating the compass on Google Maps

On Google Maps we have a classic way to calibrate the compass in case it malfunctions, which is usually one of the most common problems in the app on Android. The source of this problem may be that any of the sensors used for the calculations are not working properly and need you to calibrate it. The steps to calibrate it again are:

  1. Open the app on Android.
  2. Tap the blue circle that shows your location.
  3. Select the Calibrate Compass option at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Move your phone in the form of eight by following the on-screen instructions (do this three times).
  5. Restart the app.

With Augmented Reality Live View

This summer a new method was introduced in the application with which we can calibrate that compass, which we have already told you about. The way to do this is identical to the previous step, only now we're going to use Live View, the augmented reality of the app, so it's something we can use while we're on the street, for example. The steps to calibrate the compass using this new method are as follows:

  1. Open Google Maps on Android.
  2. Tap the blue circle that shows your location.
  3. Select the Calibrate with Live View option.
  4. Tap Start.
  5. Focus on buildings on the street until the app has located you.
  6. Restart the app.

From the settings

The above are the traditional methods when calibrating the compass in the application. A common problem if the compass does not point in the right direction is that there is an option in the settings that are enabled, which is to make the compass always point north. This causes the compass in the app to always point in the same direction, preventing it from working properly. The steps to change this are:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Tap Navigation Settings.
  5. Find the Keep map with north up option.
  6. Enable this option.
