New Qualcomm Snapdragon 678: a mid-range processor with 4G

A couple of weeks after presenting Snapdragon 888, which we will see in the high-end in Spain soon, Qualcomm makes official a new processor, this time within the mid-range. This new processor is Snapdragon 678, a chip in the mid-range that will succeed Snapdragon 675 in that market segment.

Snapdragon 678 will be a processor that we will see in 2021 in models of the most modest or common mid-range since it does not have an integrated 5G modem. This shows Qualcomm's intention to target cheaper models in this mid-segment, as is often the case with chips from the Snapdragon 600 range.

A new mid-range processor

This Snapdragon 678 is an eight-core processor, all Qualcomm Kyro 460, capable of reaching a clock speed of 2.2 GHz. This is a 10% increase in speed, from 2.0 GHz to this 2.2 GHz. As for the GPU, the brand has again employed Adreno 612, although it leaves us with a series of improvements in graphics performance designed to work better when it comes to playing. Qualcomm is aware of the importance of gaming also in the mid-range, so this aspect is improved.

We can also expect improvements in image processing, thanks to the use of Hexagon 685 DSP. Thanks to advances in the field of computational photography, improvements are obtained in photography, allowing a preview of the mid-range on Android in this regard. This processor will support dual combinations of 16 Mpx or unique 25 Mpx cameras.

Snapdragon 678 comes with a Snapdragon X12 LTE modem, which can achieve download speeds of up to 600 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150 Mbps. This chip will support Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band WiFi, in terms of connectivity, as Qualcomm has announced.

Qualcomm has confirmed that the distribution of this processor will begin soon, so we will see it on models within the simplest mid-range on Android from 2021. There have not yet been mentioned brands that will use it, but it promises to be an option that we will see a lot in this segment.
