Samsung Galaxy A52, analysis and opinion

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, análisis

Samsung's new Galaxy A line for 2021 is here, the manufacturer has long bets heavily on this section of the market, not only do consumers who pay more than 600 euros deserve a good product.

The new A52 5G, A52and A72 have been presented with a very different design than previous years and with a rather surprising list of specifications. We will take an in-depth look at the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and tell you its strengths and weaknesses.

When plastic can become an attractive material

Samsung has wanted to break with what until now seemed like a clear trend in the market. While most brands opt for crystal finishes with degraded, bright colors and mimicking the Aurora Borealis, the Korean company is unchecked with its new Galaxy A-line and chooses a flatter but just as eye-catching design.

The Galaxy A52 that has fallen into our hands is an intense light blue tone, without glitter or reflections, but manages to capture the looks equally. In the range, there are other simpler colors to choose from, such as black or white, and a lilac color also very original.

The matte housing is made of glass, a plastic that has already been used in other terminals for its ability to imitate glass and, at the same time, is more resistant. In this case, they have opted for a matte finish plus plastic that hides the footprints well and does not slip. You don't have the protection that the cover gives on the front for the screen, but at least the phone you know it's not going to "suicide" on sloping tables or soft surfaces.

The housing also protects the rear cameras, so it would be less necessary to buy a case. However, if we want the mobile to last us for years and we are not very careful, the covers are always essential to avoid bumps on the edges and the screen.

The color extends along the edges, albeit in metal. Here we have the power and volume buttons; THE SIM and microSD card slot; and at the bottom, the 3.5mm headphone jack next to the USB-C port.

Despite these two holes, the Galaxy A52 boasts IP67certification, which means it's designed so that dust or sand doesn't penetrate inside. As for the water, it allows complete immersion in water one meter deep and for 30 minutes maximum, without letting the water enters and spoil the components of the mobile.

However, the company's fine print warns that high-pressure water such as tap water can damage the device and if submerged the back cover and USB port input cover must be properly sealed. In case of wetting it with sugary or salty liquids such as a soft drink or seawater, it is important to clean the mobile well as they are very corrosive.

We are facing a lightweight and thin terminal, very comfortable to use in the day-to-day. It never ceases to amaze you how a basic material such as plastic and an unpretentious design can be elegant and attractive. Of course, when it comes to design, everyone has an opinion and there are cheaper mobiles that are much more premium.

SuperAMOLED, FullHD+ and 120 Hz display: the crown jewel of this Samsung

The display is the most precious element of this smartphone. We are looking at a good size panel of 6.5 inches, but above all very well used because its 20:9 format is surrounded by thin edges almost all with the same width. Although it is not a cascading panel, this design gives it a presence. It is also crowned with a hole through which the front chamber looms, a hole that does not bother at all.

If we liked the size and style, its features more. The display, protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, is SuperAMOLED with FullHD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,800 pixels), which translates to 407 pixels per inch. Quality for most video games and content that you will consume with this smartphone.

Also, it supports HDR so you can watch the videos with the best quality. This means that we have a very wide range of colors that can give us a lot of play and with the resolution of the screen it is almost not possible to perceive the pixels of the image. For their part, the viewing angles are wide and do not just affect the colors.

Although if these details are already good, the perfect finish comes from the soft drink rate. Samsung allows us to choose between 60 or 120 Hz. That higher level translates into greater fluidity in the user experience, very useful in some activities such as video games or scrolling. However, it is a fixed quality without the possibility of being regulated autonomously. Samsung doesn't manage the refresh rate based on the task you're doing, so you need to change it manually and if you forget at 120 Hz, you can drain the battery faster.

This does not happen with the 800 nits of brightness that manages to reach the screen. A level that we will need on very few occasions, outdoors during a very bright day, but indoors it is even painful. Luckily, Samsung has calibrated auto-adjustment well and you almost don't have to correct the brightness when changing environments so as not to force your eyesight.

Biometric systems

On the other hand, also on the front, we have facial recognition. The front camera is responsible for detecting our face to recognize us and allow us to unlock the mobile. Multiple taps on the screen or pressing the side button activates the system which is just as fast as the fingerprint reader, although less secure.

Performance and space more than enough for games and everything we need

If the display is one of the great qualities of this terminal, the processor and performance are also not far behind. We are looking at a Snapdragon 750G, capable of offering us 5G connectivity, which we will talk about later, and very good performance.

This Qualcomm SoC is built on 8-nanometer lithography that features an 8-core CPU (two to 2.2 GHz and 6 to 1.8 GHz) and an Adreno 619 GPU. Next to it, you are accompanied by 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage that you will have a hard time filling.

Although these figures can be a very clear reference, the important thing, in the end, is the user experience in day-to-day life. We have hardly any complaints about the performance of the A52 5G, it is a mobile to saturate with all the games that you can think of and if you need more space (a difficult thing) you can add a microSD card.

Its use is fluid and stable in almost all the demanding tests we have requested. Even if it's a processor destined for the mid-range, they have less and less to envy Qualcomm's family of 800, as users, at first glance we have a hard time distinguishing failures, or the difference in speed.

In the memory section, we have LPDDR4X and UFS 2.1 storage to choose between 128 GB and 256 GB, expandable by microSD. Those users who have already had a memory with the 3.1 standards in their hands, most likely miss it, especially considering that 2.1, gives less work than other mobiles with the same configuration:

This means that multitasking and other activities can cost you more than the bill at some times, a detail that is not easy for most users to come from older phones, so don't give it excessive importance.

Android 11 and One UI 3.1, full software without overloads

Samsung has been betting on Android for a long time as the operating system of its terminals and as an add-on integrates the One UI customization layer, lightweight so as not to reduce the performance of the phone, but at the same time very complete.

The Galaxy A52 5G has been released with Android 11 and One UI 3.1, i.e.the latest versions of both systems. We didn't expect any less, as we had the latest security patches and the latest technology from Google and Samsung.

Far from the simplicity that usually characterizes Google to make the operating system as light as possible, the Samsung layer has many functions. Although it is not a very heavy layer that does not have to influence the fluidity of the terminal, it is difficult to enunciate all the extra functions that Samsung has included.

One Ui offers an app drawer with most apps developed by Google and Samsung. To access your favorites faster you have the Edge Bar that you can organize as you please and that is always within reach. It also highlights the Google Discovery option instead of Samsung's Update to display the news wall. Even the button for the Bixby assistant that has so much promoted the brand is gone, you can program it in the settings to use it however you want, which gives flexibility for each user.

It also highlights Game Launcher which offers a prominent space for games and additional options during the game, or the improvement in communication between the phone and other devices such as the computer and speakers. Samsung has been betting for some time on this feedback that provides the convenience of viewing the phone screen on your computer or the ease of sending music to a Bluetooth speaker but keeping the sounds of messages and other elements on the terminal.

Four cameras led by a 64 Mpx sensor and optical stabilization for all circumstances

We reach one of the key sections of almost any mobile today and much more for the high and medium-end ones. The Galaxy A52 5G is equipped with a set of cameras that form the beginning promise to give a lot of game and this is what we will check now.

On the one hand, it integrates a 32 Mpx and f/2.2 front camera with a fixed focus on the display. While in the rear configuration we have the main sensor of 64 Mpx and f/1.8 with optical stabilization OIS (which is not usual in the range), followed by a second sensor of 12 Mpx and f/2.2 with a wide-angle lens, a third macro sensor of 5 Mpx and f/2.4, and fourthly a depth sensor 5 Mpx and f/2.4.

The application that Samsung has developed to use all the functions of its cameras is agile and fluid. The most important functions are at first glance or can be found with two quick movements: changing the format of images, enabling video stabilization, zooming, or using the macro camera.

The only thing that has been somewhat hidden to us is the HDR mode to level the lights and shadows in high contrast scenes. It is necessary to enter the settings to activate automatic HDR, it does not give us the option to apply it as we please.

With the 64 Mpx camera and optical stabilization, HDR is a rarely needed feature. The cameras of the Galaxy A52 5G are defended with very bright and sharp photographs, they are designed to capture as much light as possible in any scene. The color range is large and they get a lot of realism to the photos if we don't apply saturated filters typical of social networks.

However, in situations where, for example, the illuminated sky blinds the rest of the image, it is necessary to resort to HDR. Once enabled in the settings, HDR chooses when to do its job, indicating it on the screen so that we are aware that that image is treated. The darker parts lighten and receive brighter colors and the burnt parts take some detail back.

Wide-angle, zoom, and macro

Another interesting quality of this set of cameras is it's wide-angle. The scene is a little duller, but not too much. If the objects are close you can see some distortion, but if we place ourselves at a cautious distance almost no notice that we have resorted to the wide-angle, which is very good news.

Ultra-stable video

And we reach the end of this section, but not least, the quality of the videos recorded by the cameras of the Galaxy A52 5G. With his optical stabilization system,, there was a lot of anticipation to see what he got. Videos can be recorded in the UHD without an ultra-stable system, although that doesn't mean the movement is very abrupt, here's a sample.

For videos to be recorded on the go or with a lot of movement, it is advisable to activate the ultra-stable function. It manages to dampen the sharp jumps, without the image being frozen, the feeling it generates is fluid and very pleasant. The video resolution is FHD at 30 fps.

Autonomy for more than two days of use, but no ultra-fast charger

Now we move on to the battery of the terminal, that component that allows us to forget about the charger for at least 2 days. Samsung has equipped this Galaxy A52 with a 4,500 mAh battery, enough to have autonomy more than 48 hours, if the user is not intensive and if we do not have the 120 Hz activated, of course.

As mentioned earlier, factors such as a higher screen refresh rate or maximum brightness significantly reduce the time it takes to drain the battery on all mobiles. In this case,, the difference is clear with these two performance tests. At 60 Hz the battery lasts more than 9 hours with the display on to maximum brightness, while with 120 Hz the duration drops to almost 8 hours of battery life, as can be seen in the following image.

This shows how far we can demand the Galaxy A52 5G if we want to extend the battery life. Still, with the screen on playing video games, watching videos,, or taking photos, the Galaxy A52 has proven to have plenty of energy. In the days we have been testing it we have managed to extend a single load up to just over 2days, at night the consumption is minimal. We can forget about the charger with peace of mind and it is always possible to resort to Power Saving Mode in the settings.

Once the battery runs out, it's time to recharge the terminal. Mobile batteries are getting bigger, this means more autonomy, but also longer charging time, which is why faster-charging systems have been developed. Samsung has opted for power of 25W, but the charger does not accompany it.

The charger that accompanies the terminal in the box offers a maximum of 15W so our tests do not enjoy the speed promised by the brand. Still less than two hours of charging, a reasonable time to re-set the terminal. If we are in an emergency case and we need to charge when before the mobile with 45 minutes of charging we have managed to recharge 50% of the battery, enough for one day of space.

Dolby Atmos 5G technology and sound, connectivity for all situations

As it could not be otherwise the Galaxy A52 5G supports the latest generation of communications networks. 5G technology arrived a couple of years ago in the Samsung catalog, it was one of the first brands to present mobiles with this level of connectivity, so it is not surprising that it is already present in its intermediate lines.

Thus, we find among the specifications of this Galaxy connectivity 5G SA and NSA, that is, completely. All this technology is summed up in that we can reach speeds of more than 2 Gbps, at very specific points in the Spanish territory. After all, 5G technology is a bet for the future, you may not get as much out of it now as possible, but you make sure your smartphone isn't obsolete in the next few years when deployment is greater.

In addition to this quality, the A52 5G includes AC WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0,, and NFC. We would have preferred to have WiFi 6, the last approved standard, although to enjoy it it is also necessary to have at home a router that includes it. Of course, it has a USB-C port and supports two SIM cards or a SIM and a MicroSD card.

As for the sound, Samsung has also taken care of equipping the two speakers that the terminal has with Dolby Atmos this technology offers stereo sound to create a more immersive feeling. We can enjoy that feeling with or without headphones, it is an advantage to create more realism in movies or video games.

The volume is very good and you don't notice much distortion when it comes to putting it to the maximum which is where it usually gives problems. We also have a 3.5 mm jack to connect the speakers by cable, although they are not included in the box, so we need to have them at home. This is something that manufacturers are increasingly doing, for now,, the charger if is included in the packaging of the Galaxy A52 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, an almost round mobile

This Galaxy A family of mobiles is one of Samsung's biggest hits on the market, so hopefully,, the company will treat its mid-range-high-end mobiles with great care every year. The Galaxy A52 5G is an almost round mobile that has had a hard time getting negative points, it has them, but they are point details with much less weight than the negative aspects.

However, we found some bugs, minute compared to the other features, which could be improved. The slowness of the fingerprint reader is a failure to consider, especially if you come from faster phones. If you don't include headphones if you don't have a cable or wireless headphone of your own you'll have to spend a little more money buying some.

We have also marked as negative point the fast charging, it is not bad, but to enjoy it in all its power we must get hold of a 25W charger, another extra expense. All these details depend on the users, the priorities each has. As in the exterior design, we really liked the plastic housing, but you may prefer it in the glass.
