Ayos HCS, a device that can change the way we use the internet

When we talk about the Internet and the devices that make the connection possible, we think about routers, modems and computers, smart mobiles and TV, and some more advanced ones think about NAS and multimedia servers. Security professionals also think about firewalls, and VPNs... anyway, many gadgets and programs to create what we know as the WEB.

The thing is that we have just been presented with a product that can group everything together, the Ayos HCS.

The name and company responsible

Ayos comes from "Ay" by the company Aiyja (the company responsible) and "OS" by the operating system. On the other hand, HCS stands for "Home Connectivity Server", the result of 2 years of development, something that can protect against identity theft, ransomware, and other available threats.

The device has been created by a European company, of less than 20 people, 17 of whom are all techniques, mostly professionals who have worked in large companies, from bank people to mobile ISP people. Some have worked on GDPR and privacy issues, an issue that is strongly rooted in the product.

The product

this can be considered as a 9-in-1 functional box/node. Actually, it has 692 different functions, but from the consumer's point of view, 9 main features.

Such a B2B product can cost between 10 and 20,000 euros. In this case, we are talking about 1,790 euros in its most basic version.

They have created an easy-to-use device that they can possess and control, without relying on anyone else, to protect themselves and their family.

The hardware has been created taking into account the "right of repair" so that it is possible to repair the HCS whenever they need it without the warranty.

The functionalities

Ayos HCS

Now let's see what matters most. What Ayos HCS can do for us:

  • full enterprise-level firewall. The HCS is located between the ISP router and its devices, either fixed network or WiFI or any other configuration. The firewall protects the entire home network, not just a device, so we can see what the apps send on our phones. Allows you to block a flow of data for devices, services, or even users. Not only does it allow blocking and allowing with a single click, but it also provides ALL information about the flow of information, such as who owns the IP, DNS records, etc. All visible on the page. The idea is that we know which applications, operating systems, and programs are trying to steal what, when and how much.
  • Full NAS that enables network storage and synchronization, with up to 20 terabytes of internal storage, with the ability to manage 60 petabytes and more external data. It also works with all backup solutions, such as time machine and Windows network backup.
  • Home Cloud, to put the most used and necessary elements on the HCS, our home server. This way no one can spy, steal, change or rescue information without our permission. This Home Cloud allows you to have passwords, email, documents, contacts, and even cookies eventually in the HCS. They also have home office apps like EtherCal in the App Store. They use their own code and applications, in addition to the Nextcloud hub, that supports many external functions.
  • Internet Services & Home Anywhere. Two exclusive products of them. Internet Service allows you to use your outgoing cloud firewall, synchronize data with external parties like Amazon, pre-encrypt it, and more to come, such as sharing the Internet with friends and family. You only need to submit a link and password to approve access to the portal when they're trying to sign in. On the other hand, Home Anywhere allows you to have a VPN at home without opening any ports to the outside world through port forwarding. With a single click, we can use wireguard on any device to connect to home, with special security measures and no open network. With these systems, we can always be protected thanks to the rules created, access our homepage and all our IoT devices (including security cameras).
  • Malware blocking and ransomware protection. Block spam from India, China, Russia, etc... and have numerous ransomware protections, including the use of some of nextcloud's features. They also prevent bulk encryption, so if they fail with protection, only a maximum of 10 files will be lost.
  • Network management and WiFI. It has the ability to manage the internal x4 gigabit switch, timeless switches, and a new WiFI AP that will come out in a few months called WAPi. It will be managed entirely through HCS, allowing automatic blocking of VLANs, VTEP, QoS, and Guest Firewall. They also have interference-avoiding resources, and when integrated with the HCS, there will be many cross-functions. Before finishing 2021 they want to have BLE connected so that we can speak for Signal or other programs anywhere in the house without carrying a phone.
  • Free App Store. From there you can install apps as you launch them. At the moment they have elements that allow a developer using GitHub to share peer-to-peer torrents, use it directly within the HCS, and verify viruses, making it easier to protect. They offer pre-designed apps that are located on their own sandboxed VM to work, and the user can decide what features and Internet access each app will need.
Ayos HCS
  • Media Server. They have built-in Emby and Plex, such as network servers, preconfigured. They also have a music server, masonic, which allows greater control over theus and external sources. They use the single sign-on SSO feature, which allows an administrator to create users for HCS so that each has access to different applications, including NAS access. They can also search for networked audio, being able to play audio anywhere in the house, through the HCS app or portal.
  • Proxy. They have included many web features such as Privacy Proxy. In fact, they have installed a web proxy on the HCS that allows additional functions on parental control, web browsing controls, DNS security, and so on. They have also put cookie functions, to keep social media identification bots under control. An ideal feature to prevent our TV from sending information about what we see.
  • Parental control. It allows our entire network and devices to be placed under the supervision of parents if we wish. We'll prevent our kids from using all bandwidth, watching pornography, or clicking on nasty ads. We can also set it up so kids can only use social media for 1 hour a day or something.

Those are the main ones, but they have other options, such as HCS file manager, Air-share, data protection, and "email as a proxy", so that we can use our email client on our Mac, Windows, Linux, or BSD gnome client and access the email by staying on the HCS as an IMAP server.

What's inside

Ayos HCS

The Ayos HCS is based on Unix or "Unix type". In fact, it is mainly based on OpenBSD, with much of its own security and built-in code to improve the function.

They say it's an operating system used for decades in large companies, to create security solutions for those companies that aren't as hacked. It is incredibly fast, safe, private, and well designed.

Distribution and synchronization are key to the product. They have designed it so that the data is distributed or synchronized with HCS so that when we buy a new PC or TV, everything is as we leave it, no new configuration is needed, or at least minimal. Like having the same browser bookmarks on all operating systems, all environments, all ecosystems, no problems. And the data is ours, it's not in a provider's cloud.

About backups, they indicate that in HCS we can back up and synchronize, even 3 to 4 copies, or encrypted external backups, recorded securely.

They also work with Protocols for the Internet, being able not only to improve QOS but also to improve elements such as TCP to make games faster, browsing faster, etc. They optimize through the TCP/IP stack the consumer experience, improving a few milliseconds, keys for gamers. It has its own middleware and bridge API inside, a novelty for a consumer product.

Over the IoT world, they operate and secure the network, preventing access to the Internet, and allowing devices to act as one, regardless of their manufacturer.

Ayos HCS

From the homepage we can customize our own browser homepage, preventing the theft of identification data and cookies, and offering the possibility to integrate other applications, such as local purchasing widgets to help people back up their local businesses, for example.

Price and availability

Starting at 1790 euros, at the moment they only sell in Europe, but people can place pre-orders for outside Europe if they are willing to wait.

The promo code is SRGMMTYP, remaining for 1690 euros, and they are providing free home anywhere, i.e. incoming VPN at home, with five simultaneous connections, if you buy before June.
