Controlling traffic, pedestrians and free parking via AI: Sony's best in Rome

Smart cities are the order of the day and to do so, they have to be aware of what is going on. With Sony IMX500 sensors with integrated AI, Rome can from starting to optimize traffic jams and pollution to minimizing the number of people waiting for buses.

Sony Europe has just announced that three Rome monitoring tests are starting by Envision using IMX500 sensors that have integrated AI and can therefore identify objects in the image without the need to properly export the images to external servers and have machines or people tracking.

The main objective of this test is to evaluate and offer an intelligent parking system to reduce pollution and traffic jams caused by being looking for parking. To do this, this test seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of a system in which drivers who want to park receive an alert when there is a free site, and are directed to it.

In addition, it is expected that it is possible to recognize how many people get on or off a bus allowing the bus system to be optimized at that time by varying its frequency in real-time according to the need and people that have waited.


And finally and thirdly, they aim to monitor zebra crossings to alert drivers when they are crossing pedestrians using a low latency smart light system on the road.

These tests will be carried out during June in Rome. There may be some doubts about the privacy of that camera system, however, Sony confirms that thanks to its AI system on the sensor itself all that is sent are the metadata related to free parking, the presence of pedestrians on the street, or the number of people who get on or off the bus.

No images are stored locally or remotely, they don't even leave the sensor. Therefore, you can reduce the bandwidth required and allow you to install the tracking system on existing networks, apart from what this implies at the privacy level.

We will have to see the result of this pilot test because we could be facing a smart revolution for the new generation of cars and drivers within big cities.
