Virtual return of the video game fair

The E3 will start today and continue until Tuesday 15

LOS ANGELES (EFE).— E3, the most important fair of video games on a global scale, returns after a year of health due to the pandemic and will do so with a virtual edition that will bring together the main companies of digital entertainment but that will not have some giants such as Sony.

After skipping 2020 due to the coronavirus, E3 will begin today an edition that will extend until Tuesday 15. All the acts can be enjoyed online, in "streaming" and without leaving home.

The Convention Center of Los Angeles (United States), the usual home of this macro event, will be empty this time and will not live the scenes of the last E3, which in 2019 gathered around 66,000 people in the Downtown of the Californian city.

Beyond its virtual and non-face-to-face nature, E3 will once again be a celebration in the style of a huge leisure industry whose impressive business was also boosted by the confinement of the coronavirus.

In this sense, the consulting firm Newzoo, which specialized in the study of this entertainment sector, said that video games generated in 2020 worldwide 177,800 million dollars compared to the 145,700 million they got in 2019.

Video games may not enjoy the glamour of cinema or the attention of the media spotlights that Hollywood has, but their economic impact is far above the data of the big screen.

According to the 2019 report of the U.S. Film Association (MPAA), box office revenues from theaters worldwide in that year totaled $42,200 million, less than a third of what the video game industry achieved in those twelve months.

The "gamers" will be very attentive in this virtual E3 of the innovations presented by the different companies.

Thus, the French Ubisoft will be in charge of opening the fair with an event in which news of video games such as "Rainbow Six Extraction", "Far Cry 6" or "Riders Republic" is expected.

Xbox will be the highlight tomorrow and this time it will share a conference with developer Bethesda. This joint event foresees innovations from games such as "Halo Infinite" and "Starfield" as well as the Xbox Series X console, which was released in November 2020.

Japan's Nintendo will be in charge on Tuesday, June 15 to put the finishing touch to E3 with an event in which new details of video games such as "Metroid Prime 4", "Bayonetta 3" and the sequel to "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" could be known.

Two are the main absentees in this virtual E3: Sony and Electronic Arts.

The loss of Sony, which in November 2020 introduced the PlayStation 5, did not surprise many since this company has already given up participating in the 2019 edition even though its acts were always the most expected by fans of E3.

Electronic Arts will not be seen on this occasion either. In recent years, Electronic Arts used to organize in Los Angeles an event of its own and on the eve of E3 called EA Play, which served as the informal opening of the fair. However, Electronic Arts have chosen this year to delay EA Play, which will be held on July 22 and on the sidelines of E3.
