A MONSTER asteroid is rushing towards Earth and it should pass near it today.
According to NASA, the asteroid GO20 2008 is between 318 and 720 feet high and its size has been compared to the Great Pyramid of Giza.
The asteroid walks at 18,000 miles per hour and could approach 2.8 million miles from Earth.
For comparison, the distance from the moon is 238,855 miles, Venus is 126.11 million miles, and Mars is 236.5 million miles.
Although the asteroid does not pose a threat to Earth, NASA is closely monitoring its progress.
Space rocks pose no threat to life on Earth. In August 2020, an asteroid passed 1,830 miles above the Indian Ocean, according to Space.com.
However, because the 2008 GO20 is "potentially dangerous", the gravitational pull of the planets could alter the orbital trajectory of the object, making a future collision possible.
But this is not the first time the asteroid has approached Earth.
On August 4, 1901, it approached Earth at 806,856 miles, according to NASA records, while on July 31, 1935, it approached Earth at 1.15 million miles.
This comes as a study found that the Earth was bombed by a series of city-sized asteroids that would have killed millions of people today.
Experts believe that our planet was hit by huge objects shortly after its formation, on a scale similar to that of the asteroid strike that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Scientists believe that the Earth has been hit by a "significant" number of large asteroids – more than six miles in diameter.
