Your opinion: On company, takeovers feel like after-meal mustard

Housemarque has created several games for the PlayStation consoles. Resogun was almost a tech demo that showed the most crowded particle effects in a grandiose way. It's become a bit of a trademark in this studio's games, because their last title, the top return, doesn't hide the particle effects. Apart from the impressive particle use in their games, they are all very original toppers. Actually also titles that fit perfectly into the PlayStation repertoire of games.

The close collaboration between Housemarque and Sony has now been further strengthened as Sony welcomes the studio as a PlayStation Studio. Now Bluepoint Games is also under scrutiny, as it was handled a little awkwardly by Sony's Japanese Twitter account. For example, we can actually say that Bluepoint will also join the PlayStation family, although they themselves imply that they do not. But surprisingly, none of this is real. As mentioned before, Housemarque's games were all exclusive and Bluepoint also has a track record of several exclusives (remake) games for the Sony platforms.

What kind of addition do the acquisitions actually offer? Of course, the certainty that future projects will be developed exclusively for Sony consoles, financial support from Sony, and of course also in-house knowledge of the various other PlayStation studios. The latter is what we are now looking at because, in the long run, not everyone has to like it. The theory blueprints ' becoming more and more a thing in different exclusives, with the emotional cinematic experience being an important factor in what many of these games share. This may eventually start to repeat a bit.

Housemarque's strongest point is precisely their distinctive style of games that contrast with the rest of the PlayStation studios' portfolio. The same goes for what is now planned at Bluepoint Games. It is the best remaster studio in the industry, but will they continue to remaster/remaster (older PlayStation) games or will they get a generous budget to develop an original game? Once it beckons, it can sometimes become an ambition of such a studio.

Of course, it can blow in all directions, but the biggest issue at the center here is whether the studios can contribute innovatively through these acquisitions. Or that they can continue with what they've been doing all along. Insomniac is a good example of this. Previously, they could have gained a lot of freedom in developing different types of games, but it could have become a Spider-Man factory with natural 'trips' to Ratchet &Clank. Anyway, Sony is of course betting on what sells so it is to be hoped that other projects from this American studio will follow.

That's how the whole takeover story comes up because was this really all necessary for Sony? Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda was clear, more exclusive games need to be pumped out, and buying up an entire publisher with underlying studios is an effective way. It should be noted that it was several years ago, but since many Microsoft studios are also closed, this is a good time for the company. Since Housemarque (and lately Bluepoint Games) already had many exclusive deals with Sony, it was of course an easy purchase or a 'no-brainer'. After all, they were already closely connected to PlayStation Studios.

Think of a SEGA or Capcom, which are much more expensive to take over, of course, you bring in an even greater diversity, which also allows Sony to offer even more distinction in PlayStation's portfolio. That's why this week states that Sony's corporate acquisitions actually have few proposals and, above all, point to strengthening pre-existing business relationships. So it's not as spectacular in that as what Microsoft does and has done. It also appears to be an answer to Microsoft, although Sony indicated it's not a fight.

That's a somewhat debatable statement because in the meantime the esteemed PC port studio Nixxes was also acquired and that is already the second acquisition in a week. Well, anyway: it's an interesting discussion with a lot of angles. What do you think? Is it necessary for Sony to invest in such companies to add them to the PlayStation family or can the money be better spent on other things, such as an alternative to Game Pass?
