Tom Cruise: Top Gun 2 could become the biggest debut box office

Last week, the American blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters, starring and produced by Tom Cruise. The work comes 36 years after the release of the franchise's first film and, according to Variety magazine, is expected to become the biggest box office opening of the star's career.

According to initial figures, on Thursday (26), in the U.S. only, the film grossed US$19.3 million, which marks the most extensive preview for Paramount Pictures. Of this amount, 21.2% represent views on Imax screens, responsible for US$4.1 million (about R$19.4 million). Outside the U.S., Top Gun raised about $65 million in the countries in which it was launched, including Brazil.

A report released by Deadline estimates that Top Gun: Maverick will reach $180 million in world premieres, which equates to more than $851 million – a figure never before achieved by any film work by Tom Cruise.

At the top of the 2017 box office rankings of the actor's debut, "The Mummy" grossed $172.3 million during its first weekend. This, considering the releases in Russia and China, is an important market in which the air combat feature film should not be shown.

In addition to Tom Cruise in the lead role, the cast of Top Gun: Maverick features the likes of Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Ed Harris, and Lewis Pullman, and features Lady Gaga on the soundtrack.

Synopsis of "Top Gun: Maverick": "After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's leading aviators, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell is back, breaking the boundaries as a brave test pilot. In the contemporary world of technology wars, Maverick faces drones and proves that the human factor is still essential."
